My daughter loves the fairy tale of Cinderella…a poor servant girl living with her stepmother and stepsisters. Many elements of this simple fairy tale are relevant to our world today. Dysfunctional and broken families, as well as blended families are symbolized by the step-mother and step-sisters living with Cinderella. The deep desire and yearning of us all to be noticed by important people and invited to special occasions, just as the ugly step-sisters are so eager to impress the prince and Cinderella just wishes to attend the ball. The pecking order of society, with the step-mother calling the shots and poor Cinderella reduced to a servant in her own home.
And then the redemption and restoration of the prince finding his love….the princess he met and fell in love with at the ball. Cinderella is in her rags when she tries on the glass slipper and it fits, and yet this is insignificant to the prince. All he cares about it the fact that he has found his true love.
And so it is with God….he woes us and calls us and falls in love with us, and doesn’t care about the brand of clothes we wear, or the car we drive, or the area or house we live in. His concern is that the glass slipper fits, that the gift of his dying on the cross & the forgiveness he offers, is received, and that his love for you and me is acknowledged and embraced. All He wants is an open heart. And just like Cinderella, he turns our rags into robes and our worries into worth. He transforms us into his initial creation…into his image and likeness. He restores! Colossians 3: 9 &10. ” Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with it’s practices and have put on the NEW self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the IMAGE of it’s CREATOR.”
